Okay, I am giving this place a second chance. Not sure if I will bother uploading art again, but maybe I can use the journal to express some of my thoughts and problems and get opinions from other artists.
So, I was chatting with a buddy about appeal some days ago. His teachers wanted him to draw in this angular and flat style that is supposedly popular in modern cartoons ala Total Drama Island and Johnny Test. And told him this Wolverton/Ed Roth-inspired art style of his was very ugly and unappealing. Something I disagreed with. The characters he showed me I felt looked cold and abstract. They all had feet with straight lines and looked like people from a show where everything is drawn on a flat angle. While characters like Lena Hyena and Ratfink are made up from round shapes and look three dimensional. Which in my opinion makes them look much much more appealing, despite all the wrinkles, bodyhair, warts etc. Big Baddy and Basil's characters also have proper poses and construction, while those TV-animation characters he showed me looked like tracings of model sheets or stock poses.
But hey, what do someone like me know who can't even make enough money from my art to buy half a cup of coffee? Not sure if I am right or wrong on this, so feel free to prove me wrong. I look forward to arguments from both sides of the debate.
